Sydney Poitier – Master Artist and Teacher

RIP my dear teacher, friend, and inspiration,
I wonder, Sydney, if you know how many lives you touched, how much of the world you changed. I am sure that millions and more loved you and learned from you. I did. When I was in high school you were beginning your screen career. it is not often in my life that I make such a strong connection to a person, especially a screen star. For me, the moment I met you I was in love. It wasn’t about your character (well maybe a little), it was almost totally about YOUR character. Who you are blasted through the movie screen. There were no barriers to prevent me from knowing you and loving you. I don’t cry much, sometimes at movies. I watched your movies over and over, and each time my heart was touched so deeply that tears flowed. Your essence, energy, spirit, light, whatever you name it, flooded me and inspired me. You always showed me the ‘way’ the world could be, the possibilities of ‘being’ the best.

Thank you Sydney for pushing through the challenges of your life, and allowing your light to shine. You are one of my heroes and the stories you told on-screen lifted me into very high states of mind. So today, when you passed I watched some of my favorites, Lily of the Fields, To Sir with Love, and Guess Who’s coming to Dinner? I cried at the end. I feel so grateful that you were here on the planet, to help us learn the lessons you ‘are’. This is just a note, a love letter ‘To Sir with Love.’ May your journey into freedom be powered by Love.
